Font viewer for Windows
Windows' own font preview shows a short pangram in a small box. That is not enough to choose a typeface for anything real.
Get TypeSmith from the Microsoft StoreWhat you actually need to see
- Your own text, not "The quick brown fox". A heading of eight words and a table of numbers stress a font in different ways.
- Latin and Chinese side by side - a typeface that looks right in English is often the wrong choice for CJK, and the fallback will not match it.
- Light, white and dark backgrounds, because contrast decides legibility more than the font does.
- Glyph counts and classification, so you know whether the font is a full family or a logo face with forty characters.
Two of ours, different jobs
| App | Best for | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| TypeLens | Browsing: fastest way to flip through every installed font with live preview and five style filters | Free |
| TypeSmith | Working: tables, metrics, coverage, conversion, subsetting, install/uninstall | Free + one-time Pro unlock |
Both read the fonts already on the machine. Neither uploads anything, and neither needs an account.
Judging a font quickly
- Type the real string you need - a product name, a URL, a date range.
- Switch background: most "elegant" light weights die on a dark UI.
- Check the numerals: tabular versus proportional figures decide whether a table lines up.
- Check the characters your copy actually uses, including punctuation and accented letters.
Questions
Do these apps install fonts?
TypeSmith can install and uninstall a font for the current user (Pro). Viewing never changes anything.
Do they work offline?
Yes, both are fully local.
Which one should I start with?
TypeLens if you want to browse and preview; TypeSmith if you need to inspect or convert.
