GEDCOM viewer for Windows

A GEDCOM file is the one thing every family history site will give you when you ask for your data - and the one thing Windows cannot open by itself.

Get KinCanvas from the Microsoft Store

What a GEDCOM file actually is

GEDCOM (.ged) is a plain text format for family trees. Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch and every genealogy program can export it. It stores people, the events in their lives, and the links between them - who was whose child, who married whom. It is not a photo, so double-clicking it in File Explorer usually opens a text editor and shows you lines like 0 @I1@ INDI.

If all you want is to see the tree - the shape of a branch, who somebody's grandparents were, how two people are related - you do not need a full research program. You need a viewer.

Opening a GEDCOM file on Windows, step by step

  1. Install KinCanvas from the Microsoft Store (link at the bottom of this page).
  2. Start it and choose Open GEDCOM file, then pick your .ged file.
  3. The people list fills in. Pick a name - the tree is drawn around that person.
  4. Switch between the ancestor view, the descendant view and the fan chart from the chart menu.
  5. Use the relationship tool to ask "how are these two related?" - it walks the graph, including families where a person appears through more than one line (which simple viewers break on).
  6. Print or export the chart. It is drawn at true size rather than shrunk to fit the window, so a five-generation tree prints on the number of pages it actually needs.

What to check before you trust a viewer

Free and Pro

The free plan opens a file and draws the tree, the ancestors, the people list and the relationship viewer. Pro (a one-time purchase, no subscription) removes the file and generation limits, adds the fan chart, every relationship line, printing and export.

KinCanvas reads the GEDCOM file you open and writes only the files you ask it to export. There is no account and nothing is uploaded.

Questions

Can I open a GEDCOM file without installing anything?

Not reliably. A .ged file is plain text, so a text editor will show you the records, but you will not see a tree. Any viewer has to be installed first.

Does it edit my family file?

KinCanvas is a viewer. It reads the file and exports charts; it does not rewrite your GEDCOM.

Will it open a very large tree?

It handles trees with tens of thousands of people. The free plan limits how many files you can open and how many generations are drawn; Pro lifts that.
